When in fact, numbers from the Pew Hispanic Center, a respected authority on the issue show that “About 59 percent of illegal immigrants, or 7 million, came from Mexico. Other regions included Asia (11 percent), Central America (11 percent), South America (7 percent), the Caribbean (4 percent) and the Middle East (2 percent).”. So cleary, at least 71% and up to 77% of the illegal immigrants, according to the Pew Hispanic Center are of Hispanic decent.

This is clearly a higher number than the “half” of 10 to 12 million you state in your post. There is a huge difference in “about half” (50% = 5 to 6 millon) and 77% (9 to 10 millon) using the Pew Hispanic Center’s numbers.

Please use facts and be able to verify those that you do use.

One thing you have to do is think on the long term. The number of Baby Boomers retiring in the next 15 years is a concrete number that can’t be denied. Statistics show that, without immigration, the United States does not (and has never) replenished it’s workforce based on the birth rate of non-immigrants. For our economy to grow, we need to not only replace those who are retiring out of the workforce, we need our workforce to grow. Why not fix the broken system so the workers we need can come here legally in the long term? (Whatever animosity you might have toward those already here, let me put that aside for now.)

It is in our national interest to keep our economy growing instead of shrinking. The economy is important not only for individual prosperity but also for national security (tax dollars fund our military). So if the far right were to take the position that they’d rather see the work force shrink, the retirement population grow, and our economy collapse than abide by an increase in non-white percentages, I just don’t understand the reasoning.

I’m only speaking of 10% of our country who feel this way. But they are very vocal, so motivated are they by their fear. They opposed immigration long before the the Bush Economic Crisis, so I don’t think 10% unemployment is really the issue for them.
But since you are distancing yourself from them in that regard, let’s talk about the 10% unemployed we are both concerned about. People who are working illegally right now in the farming industry are NOT going to compete with bankers and sales agents who are currently collecting unemployment payments from the federal government. They are also not going to be eligable for those payments for 5 or more years. In fact, the jobs that the 10% unemployed are hoping will come back depend upon, guess what, a growing economy instead of a shrinking one. That means more workers, not less. Our economy can only grow if we have enough low-skill workers to do the jobs that create the products that the rest of the economy buys and sells. If instead we have businesses moving to other countries because they can’t count on the labor supply in this country, that will not be a good thing for any American, regardless of race. There will be less jobs for thar 10%, not more.
