Good point, Twinad. All I can say is that they would have gotten that reprieve from me either way. Volunteer soldier? Service in Iraq or Afghanistan? We owe them all --- big time.

Thank goodness. I wish it didn't take brain damage and other injuries like that to make it okay for this family to stay together though. What if he had come home from war healthy? Would they have gotten the reprieve in that case?

CNN just reported that Barrios' wife has been spared deportation. DHS has joined the request to have deportation proceedings halted.

This story is probably the one immigrant story everyone agrees with each other on. I haven't seen this before, I don't think.

Agree with Emma and Wolverine. Why on earth would it matter to anyone whether she applied for legal status before or after the marriage? Terrible story and I hope someone pays attention and does something for this family. Pat.Herve, plenty of people also marry "foreigners" and can't get legal status for their spouse because laws have changed over the years.

It is a wonderful testament to see so many people with differing views come to a consensus for this war veteran, his wife, and mother to his children.

Jack Barrios appears to have already paid a price on behalf of all the rest of us. Regardless of where you stand on the immigration issue as a whole, it is clear that we need to ramp up our system for a fair adjudication of "special cases" and "exceptions to the rule." In a case like this one, I doubt that there are many of us who could not find it in our hearts to give Barrios and his wife a break in life. Barring that, surely there is some Congressman or Senator who could do something which would bring this to a satisfactory conclusion for the Barrios family. Giving this particular couple a break is something over which none of us should be at loggerheads.

"brain damage and back and joint injuries"'

Enough said. The soldier's paid his dues threefold. Let her stay.

I don't know many details, but apparently she knew she was here without proper documentation but did NOT know there were deportation orders pending against her.
