Jail Overcrowding

According to the DC Examiner Prince William County jails are overcrowded with more than 300 inmates being housed in other localities some 4 hours away.  But BVBL surmises that this ‘piece of the puzzle doesn’t really belong.’

Let me get this straight.  ‘Illegals’ are removing their kids from County Schools and moving to surrounding jurisdictions so that’s a cost savings to schools; but the foreclosures and the plummeting real estate market are unrelated?  Now, after touting about hundreds of immigration violators being detained, reports about jail overcrowding suggest only a ’tangential relationship’?  Do they believe we’re that gullible?

There has been no cost benefit analysis performed to prove whether or not this resolution would even save us money.  And, now the initial costs have doubled with no confirmed savings.  Plus, guaranteed either Clinton, Obama or McCain will be the next President which bodes well for a national response that incorporates some form of legalization; yet we continue to flush millions down the commode.  But that no additional monies are allotted for zoning enforcements which seemed to be one of the primary concerns expressed by residents during Citizens Time runs counter to logic.  In hindsight, this whole thing is going to look like a major SNAFU which won’t help any long-term political aspirations for either Stewart or Stirrup.

Raising Kaine suggests Stewart’s LG run could be over. Boy wasn’t that quick.

Some of GL’s quotes over there don’t make sense but I’m not going to take the time to type up a rebuttal only to have it disappear into the ether.

I’ve watched the BOCS over the years and this passage of the immigration resolution is the least thought out, stupidest move I’ve seen in a while. At a time when most local governments are very conscious of their dwindling resources and are being conservative in their outlook and planning, ours (PWC) is forging ahead with no idea of whether this policy will pay off in any manner whatsoever. It certainly hasn’t paid off in community relations.

Stewart and Stirrup are trying to force this measure on everyone at the minimal tax increase with no regard for the voters’ record of support of other issues - roads, schools, libraries, parks. I think all these other items should be supported first and then let them put their bucks where their mouths are and raise the tax further if they feel the immigration issue is so important.

It’s my understanding that the jail will again be at capacity as soon as the new addition is opened.

So, are you saying that you want criminal illegal aliens in our community? SCAPP pays a portion of the costs to house illegal aliens in our jail.

I’ll scoop BVBL and say that the Liberty Street sign has been repainted. Don’t have the wording. DH just called to that that there had been a change. Bound to be more controversial.

    “that” = “say” above

The new language on the sign is an illogical unfactual rant,
once again lambasting Manassas Councilmen as KKK Nazi slavers, etc.
Guilty of every sin known to men.
This no doubt, will be soon be followed by BVBL blog rants
accusing illegal immigrants for every sin known to men. Plus,
of course, attacking the same City Council as a bunch of damn
cowardly wimps for allowing the sign to stay up.
    Ah yes, Spring is here.

The signage doesn’t seem a very smart political move coming just before the BOCS addresses the tax rate once again…unless the proverbial fix is in as far as funding for the resolution and MWB knows it.

    Anon-100,
    Thanks for stopping in.

People being detained for a month for an outstanding order of deportation that’s a decade old when they are employed, parents, homeowners etc… seems a bit overkill especially when they are released to resume their normal lives. Of course, I have no sympathy for real criminals. But immigration status should be checked after arrest not by stopping someone on the street.

Hi Admin, the enforcement part is only after arrest for immigration violations. According to the resolution and police department instruction to its officers, “casual encounters” are not permitted to be used as a basis for checking immigration status. There has to be a crime or a legal or lawful stop or detention. Nobody gets stopped just walking down the street. I think you are still harping on the couple walking down the street carrying Honda parts that were stopped by the police. Well, the police were sent to a stolen Honda at that same location, so that was a lawful detention. Again, NOBODY gets stopped for no reason just walking down the street. Its misinformation like that that spreads more fear and concern.

By the way, if someone is in the NCIC system (national criminal data base for police) as failing to show for a deportation order, the local police CANNOT enforce that, its civil and PWCPD was told to document the stop and release anyone involved unless they had criminal or other charges on that person. That will, therefore, meet your requirement of post arrest enforcement by ICE of a deportation order.

There has been no cost benefit analysis performed to prove whether or not this resolution would even save us money.” This, in aonjunction with statements made by Stewart and Stirrup, in addition to origin of the policy, makes me quite comfortable saying “these people are racist.” They aren’t even “GOOD” racists, in fact. “GOOD” racists will at least come up with some better veiled seemingly logical justification for their actions. None of this is logical, save getting real criminals off the streets (which PWC has been doing anyway).

    “conjunction”
